Job Summary:
The Drake University School of Education – Department of Teaching and Learning invites applications for an Adjunct Instructor in ESL Education. This candidate will be responsible for teaching TESL 125/225: Teaching Literacy to Multilingual Students. This course fulfills requirements for Drake University’s K–12 ESL endorsement and focuses on research-based and culturally responsive literacy instruction for multilingual learners.
The successful candidate will teach one section of TESL 125/225 in Fall 2026. The course objectives and syllabus have already been established. The instructor will be responsible for facilitating course activities and projects designed to meet course objectives as well as grading all related coursework. The course is delivered in an online format with required synchronous Zoom sessions.
Course Description
TESL 125/225: Teaching Literacy to Multilingual Students focuses on literacy instruction for multilingual learners across K–12 contexts. The course is grounded in second-language literacy and content-based instruction and explores best practices for supporting literacy development in English while maintaining students’ home and community languages.
Topics include:
• Literacy development across first and additional languages
• Biliteracy development and translanguaging
• Technology and multiliteracies
• Vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension
• Writing instruction for multilingual learners
• Literacy assessment for English learners
• Supporting diverse multilingual populations including newcomers, long-term English learners, and SLIFE students
• Culturally responsive approaches to literacy instruction

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in TESOL, ESL Education, Literacy Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field
• Experience working with multilingual learners in educational settings
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience teaching multilingual learners in K–12 settings
• College/university teaching experience, particularly with adult learners
• Experience with online and hybrid teaching formats
• Knowledge of culturally responsive and equitable literacy instruction practices
• Experience designing literacy instruction for English learners
• Doctoral degree in TESOL, ESL Education, Literacy Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field
Job Duties:
- 65% - each using the pre-developed syllabus and readings
- 10% - Maintain timely communication with students to assist them in achieving course objectives
- 10% - Monitor and document individual student progress
- 5% - Establish consistent methods of assessing students around course objectives
- 5% - Motivate students to actively participate in all aspects of the course
- 5% - Communicate questions and concerns with collaborating ESL faculty
