Department Summary:

Come join the Drake Facilities team! We are seeking a competent, trustworthy and reliable person to serve as a Duty Engineer. This is an entry level HVAC position with continuous on-the-job training and opportunities for growth and development.

Job Summary:

The Duty Engineer will troubleshoot, diagnose, make minor repairs and perform preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment, generally after regular business hours. Working under minimal supervision, this position will answer and address duty calls from Public Safety, perform regular rounds of building mechanical rooms, investigate potential issues, adjust building automation system which serves HVAC equipment, inspects and performs regular preventative maintenance across campus. This position will also assist with the seasonal changeover from cooling to heating and vice versa. The duty engineer will provide excellent customer service and follow all safety, department, and university policies.

Minimum Qualifications:

* High school diploma or equivalent

* Mechanical skills and aptitude

* Some knowledge of HVAC & boiler equipment

* Ability to read, write, and communicate using English

Preferred Qualifications:

* Valid driver's license and insurable by the University

* General knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration equipment, boilers, and electrical control wiring

* Ability to read blueprints and schematic diagrams for wiring/electrical/controls a plus

* Experience with or a strong willingness to learn power tools, diagnostic equipment, welders

Job Duties:

  • 30% - Monitor and answer duty phone, troubleshoot, diagnose and address urgent maintenance calls, remedying the issues you can and/or communicating the need for additional attention
  • 20% - Troubleshoot, diagnose, and complete minor repairs to HVAC equipment, communicating problems to supervisor, and creating work orders
  • 15% - Perform regular building rounds, adjusting BAS, inspect and perform preventative maintenance including filter and belt changes as needed
  • 10% - Monitor boiler and chiller equipment, complete assigned tasks regarding their operation 
  • 10% - Assist with seasonal changeover of HVAC equipment
  • 5% - Assist with other emergency duties as needed, such as minor custodial or cleaning issues 
  • 5% - Schedule repairs or preventative maintenance to avoid unintentional interruption of equipment 
  • 5% - Other duties as assigned
