Drake University Head Start and Early Head Start programs support the comprehensive development of children from birth to age 5, in classroom settings, home-based programs, & childcare partner locations.

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for oversight of four program coordinators and floating classroom staff. The role oversees curriculum and educational material needs, develops and monitors educational program calendars, and assists in the agency administration.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree w/ graduate or undergraduate course work in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or Elementary School Administration, and/or special Education Services
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with young children and families with direct classroom instruction, and working in and/or supporting special education environments
  • Minimum of 2 years administrative and/or supervision experience
  • Current Iowa Driver’s License and the ability to be covered by the University’s insurance carrier.

Job Duties:

25%-Oversee curriculum and educational material needs: Ensure all teaching staff and coordinators have sufficient knowledge, training, experience, and competencies to fulfill the roles and responsibilities of their positions and ensure high-quality service delivery.  Monitor projects initiated by program coordinators and classroom staff to ensure maximum effectiveness and compliance. 

25% - Supervise and guide HS/EHS program coordinators & CCP Directors: Assess the needs, arrange, coordinate, evaluate, and monitor the professional development of program coordinators. Ensure Head Start, and Early Head Start programs are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws rules, codes, and performance standards.  Assess relevant needs, arrange, coordinate, and evaluate professional development as committee co-chair.  Ensure the professional development of classroom staff is aligned with relevant curriculum and competencies. Encourage collaboration with instruction coaches, behavior interventionist, mental health consultants, and family engagement specialists.

15% - Develop and monitor educational programs: recommend and implement policies, procedures, programs and new initiatives for functional areas related to educational curriculum. Act as Teaching Strategies Gold Administrator, archiving inactive students and granting access to classrooms, teachers, and coordinators. Monitor HS and EHS programs and analyze information to make programmatic recommendations as necessary.

15% - Create and maintain accurate reports and records within applicable regulations and Performance Standards. Maintain confidentiality of all documents maintained in the department. Oversee accurate program reporting and records within applicable regulations and Performance Standards for Head Start Agency. Maintain center quality assurance measures via state Quality Rating and Improvement System (IQ4K).

5% - Assist in the agency administration: Serve as a member of the agency’s Leadership Team. Recommend procedures for childcare partnerships. Assume day-to-day responsibility for the Drake University Head Start program when the Director is on leave.

5% - Staff management: assist in development of job descriptions, interviewing, and selection of new staff. Conduct performance management via one-on-ones and annual performance appraisals. Maintain performance documentation.

5% - Collaborate with Intervention & Disability Program Manager Collaborate with staff in utilizing data to oversee a coordinated approach that ensures the full and effective participation of all children with identified disabilities or suspected delays and their families via Child Assistance Team (CAT). Ensure responsive systems and quality services across the program. Encourage the Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) within the program, be familiar with local AEAs/LEAs participation in evaluation and services.

5% - Federal Head Start Program Performance Standards, state and local regulations, r rules and requirements compliance. Maintain strict confidentiality of all records and documents. Maintain department records and reports in a secure manner.  Represent Drake University and Drake University Head Start in a professional manner.  Treat clients, co-workers, staff, parents and community members with respect and civility, and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for everyone at all times.  React to change productively, maintain prompt and regular attendance, and perform all other duties as assigned. Promote Head Start philosophy and initiatives..
