Department Summary:

Drake University Facilities Planning & Management is in search of talented, experienced, service-minded individuals to assist our maintenance department. Job Summary:

This position performs a variety of work in the maintenance and repair of buildings and furnishings at multiple locations on campus. Work includes carpentry, glazing, painting, drywall hanging and finishing, furniture repair, flooring repair, wall hangings, and more. This position responds and repairs issues with floors, walls, windows, and completes inspections and maintenance or cleaning of roofs, gutters, and drains. Performs minor troubleshooting, repairs, and adjustments on doors, locks, cabinets, desks, closets; repairs door hinges and closers; reports mechanical malfunctions to appropriate parties for resolution; completes service requests (work orders) in academic spaces and in student housing spaces.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Any combination of education, training, and experience (3-5 years) which demonstrates ability to perform duties and responsibilities as described including related experience in building maintenance trades; at minimum a high-school diploma and/or GED with associated experience in the trades
• Knowledge of basic use of hand and power tools for building trades; maintenance of hand tools
• Basic knowledge of and/or experience in the following trades: carpentry, plumbing, glass replacement, painting, masonry, safety practices and procedures related to the building trades, proper lifting techniques, basic math
• Ability to follow instructions, to report to work on time and to consistently meet the department work schedule
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and insurable by Drake University’s policy; willingness to work outside (if necessary) in inclement weather

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3-5 years’ experience in the building trades
• Ability to perform several maintenance trades at a journeyman level with minimal supervision (drywall/plaster/painting, carpentry, flooring, roofing, masonry, glazing)

Job Duties:

  • 60% - Respond to service requests (work orders) from our customers (faculty, staff, students, visitors/guests) in a timely manner with a positive and friendly attitude – tasks could include a wide variety of maintenance and repair items ranging from patching/painting, flooring repairs, door/hardware repair, grouting or repair of tile and other , hanging pictures, repairing furniture and fixtures in faculty/staff areas, classrooms, offices, or general campus spaces - (Essential)
  • 30% - Annual summer turnover and ongoing work in residential hall spaces including repair of all furniture fixtures, windows/screens, smoke detectors, and continued response during the academic year - (Essential)
  • 5% - Assist with various campus events throughout the year including graduation, Drake Relays, Athletics events, State Track & Field, other large-scale campus events - (Essential)
  • 5% - Other duties as assigned - (Essential)
