Department Summary:

Drake University's Office of Finance includes Student Accounts, Accounting/Accounts Payable/Procurement, Budgeting, Treasury/Endowment, and Finance functions, along with the Financial Aid Office.

Job Summary:

The Office of Finance seeks a full-time staff accountant to join our team. The Staff Accountant reports to the Assistant Treasurer and is responsible for completing various accounting functions. Key duties include accounting for gifts to the University, recording investment activity related to the University's endowment investments, managing Drake-owned life insurance policies, and preparing reconciliations. This position works with many offices across campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting and 1-3 years of relevant accounting experience

• Strong Excel skills

• Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects while meeting deadlines

• Excellent organizational skills

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with investment accounting

• Experience with not-for-profit accounting

• Experience in higher education

Job Duties:

  • 30% - Balance gifts to the University recorded by Drake’s Office of Advancement, maintain gift documentation electronically, monitor stock gifts, and complete necessary entries and deposits. Work closely with the Office of Advancement Records team to ensure all gift activity is recorded appropriately. Set up new funds as needed.
  • 30% - Post monthly activity from investment manager statements, update unitized endowment spreadsheet, and assist with annual endowment distribution. 
  • 15% - Maintain various tracking spreadsheets and prepare reconciliations as well as workpapers for Drake’s annual external audit.
  • 10% - Assist University Budget and Office Managers with questions related to restricted and endowed spending funds. Review restricted and endowed spending fund expenses for appropriateness based on donor restriction.
  • 10% - Manage Drake-owned life insurance policies.
  • 5% - Perform other duties, as assigned.
